Founds this funky looking dish over at Utopian Kitchen. According to them its called Miser Wat; A quick google search found a restaurant in Canberra that suggests its full name might be Alit’cha Miser Wat, which is apparently Ethiopian for yellow lentils. So apparently those guys switched yellow for red lentils.
Anyway, corrects in the comments please. đŸ™‚ I’m looking foward to trying this one out. That is, when I can find somewhere to buy berbere.
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 2 tsp garlic, chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
- 2 tbs berbere
- 2 cups split red lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1.5 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
- 1/8 cup red wine
Add lentils and water to a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, adding wine. In a small skillet, saute the onions in the olive oil, until the onions are translucent. Add the garlic and ginger and saute for another minute. Add the berbere and saute for a few minutes more, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Mix in the chopped tomatoes and simmer for 3 min. Add this mixture to the lentils, along with the salt, and simmer, on low heat, for 20 min.
One is meant to serve with injera and a vegetables; Another quick google search suggests that I should be able to get it, and perhaps some berbere from the Red Sea Grocery at 173 Beaudesert Road, Moorooka. 3848 8039. I’ll keep you posted.
